Women for STEM

If a young woman told you she wanted to be a NUCLEAR ENGINEER, an ASTROPHYSICIST or a NETWORKING ANALYST, what would you say to her?

Research tells us that only 19 per cent of engineering graduates are women, and only 11 per cent are practicing engineers (www.catalyst.org).

Through a new program called Women for STEM, we are doing great things to encourage success for our women students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, with the ultimate goal of increasing gender parity in STEM careers.

The Women for STEM program is built on three pillars to engage and empower women:

  • Mentorship and networking opportunities.
  • Investing in scholarships and bursaries for women in STEM.
  • Celebrating and promoting the achievements of women students, alumni, faculty and staff throughout the university community and greater community.

We all have a role to play in braving the future together.

  • Women for STEM Fund

    WHAT IS THE WOMEN FOR STEM FUND?

    The Women for STEM Fund is an opportunity for women students to fulfill their potential in innovative STEM-based fields and to inspire and celebrate women as innovators, entrepreneurs and change agents.

    The goal for our first year is to create a $100,000 expendable fund to offer 20 new entrance scholarships valued at $5,000 each, for women students in STEM disciplines at our university.

    Donors can name funds within the Women for Women Fund for expendable gifts of $5,000 or more. The Board of Governors Matching Fund will match all donations of $5,000 or more until the fund is fully subscribed.

    The 20 Women for STEM award recipients will also be paired with a senior mentor in their first year.

    The mentorship portion of the program will provide a variety of opportunities for students throughout their university years to receive encouragement and support.

    FUNDRAISING GOAL:
    $100,000 to provide 20 new entrance scholarships in the 2019-2020 academic year.

  • Mentorship

    The Women for STEM program includes mentoring and networking opportunities to support our students throughout their time at the university. All faculties and the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies are included in this program with the hope to expand it to alumni.
